[Entry 01] I'm bad at making titles for blog entries so bear with me in the future

And so my first year at U of T begins!

For all the attempts to scare me about university made by professors and upper-year students who spoke at orientation events, I don't feel scared at all. So far, university seems like a much more independent and laid-back version of high school (which is a good thing). Not to mention how much it helps to not have my motivation sucked out of me by my parents constantly telling me to do my work at 11 in the morning on the weekend. Yup! I feel like I'm off to a great start.

I didn't know what to expect of CSC165 before school began. My older brother (a 3rd year student in Engineering Science, who I may mention a lot in the future) told me what he knew about it from his friends, and if I had any impression at all it was that CSC165 would be all about proofs. So far, that claim seems more or less accurate. All we've talked about are if/then statements, sets represented by Venn diagrams, and general logic. Logic is something I've always found interesting because it's how things work, it's the guidelines of the world as we know it. I'm looking forward to learning a lot in this course!

On the other hand, I have a pitiful attention span. After the first two lectures of the course I've lost focus, perhaps because of how repetitive the material seems. It's all very interesting, and the Professor Heap's methods make perfect sense, too (making sure we understand the topic by going through multiple examples), but the number of examples he's given us and the conditions of the UC140 classroom are too much for my poor little head at 11AM after two hours of class previously. Hopefully I've retained most of the information so far, but I'm also going to have to rely on a lot of common sense, I think, which is unfortunate and undesirable.

Here's to wishing myself the best of luck in this course!
